The skin is just not the outer protective, covering for the body. The skin of the face and the body is very special, complex, living organ aswell as a source of beauty. To look beautiful you should have a beautiful skin.
As the skin texture is structured in a very complex way. There are four things that effect it-heredity, environment, age and the amount of care bestowed upon it.If you put a section through your skin it would reveal a composition of closely connected layers.
The three main layers are the Epidermis, Dermis and the Sub-Dermis layer fo the skin.
The epidermis is the topmost, horney outer layer made up of a substance called keretine and protein which protects your skin from the cold ,heat, and dryness that can cause skin problems. This is the layer that you fret about as all the physical and mental stress is shown in this layer.
In the lower layer of the epidermis, new cells grow and as they grow, they push upwards to the surface.By the time they reach the surface of they complete the lifecycle and become the dead cells or dead protein which have to be removed to make way for new cells.
The dried up cells get washed away when we bathe or are rubbed off by the friction of our clothes or by using a scrub.
The skin is constantly growing and after about 20 days new cells are born at it's base. This process is also called 'shedding' of the skin.
Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis or the true skin or the inner layer. Though you cannot see it, this is where trouble often begins. Here pimples and acne come and also other plagues begin before you are even aware of it. In this layer oil and sweat glands are found, hair follicle and blood vessels.
The third layer is the under layer of the sub dermal layer or the fatty layer. This fatty layer serves as cushions and helps to give shape to the body. If a large portion of thin fat is lost quickly through illness, crash diet or stress, the skin becomes loose and shaggy, folds and wrinkles form and takes time to adjust to the form.
Thus we see that the skin is a highly intricate structure consisting of cells which are dying and being removed again and again in the process.
The type and condition of the new skin depends on many factors as mentioned earlier such as diet, general health, emotions, the life you lead and the amount of attention you give to take care of your beautiful skin.
First it is vital to realize that soft youthful looking skin is because of water or moisture in the skin. The millions of cells in the skin contain water which gives it softness. The skin is robbed of this moisture by the sun, wind, cold, age, air conditioners. Too much sun or cold make these cells shrink and unable to hold enough water. The water escapes and gives a dry appearance. That’s when the skin begins to look like prune instead of plum.
What your skin needs by the way of treatment to improve the texture depends on its type.
So lets see the different types of skin in further posts.
